With all the chaos and uncertainty in our country today one thing should remain steadfast: our national motto “In God We Trust.”

64 years ago today, President Eisenhower formalized what had already been inscribed in the heart of our nation when he signed into law ‘In God We Trust’ as our official national motto.

With so many voices across our land trying to pull that motto down or erase it altogether, I was honored to sponsor H.Con Res 13 in 2011 which passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 396 to 9. This Resolution reaffirmed “In God We Trust” as our national motto and went further by encouraging its public display in all public buildings, public schools, and other government institutions.

Since that time, more people are boldly displaying ‘In God We Trust’ than ever before. Police, Sheriff, and Fire departments are displaying it on their vehicles and uniforms. City Councils and School Boards are putting it up where they meet. Mississippi legislators recently voted to add it to their state flag, and one individual in Texas recently bought 1,000 ‘In God We Trust’ decals to give out to friends and family wherever he goes.

But as you know, there is a Fight for Faith in America and we have all just begun.

Here’s more fun history around our national motto ‘In God We Trust”:

• The phrase is found in the fourth verse of our National Anthem. By the War of 1812, this national sentiment was so entrenched that Francis Scott Key, in penning the fourth verse of our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” wrote: “And this be our motto—‘In God is our trust.’”
• The phrase first appeared on U.S. coins in 1864.
• The first paper money with the phrase ‘In God We Trust’ was printed in 1957.
• The national motto, ‘In God We Trust,’ was created by Act of Congress in 1956. The bill was signed into law on July 30, 1956 by President Eisenhower.
• The national motto was affirmed in 2002, and then in 2011 the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly (396 to 9) passed a resolution reaffirming the national motto and encouraging the public display of this motto in all public buildings and public schools.
• Numerous state legislatures have passed similar laws and are encouraging schools and state offices to place a poster with the national motto in every classroom.
• The national motto is inscribed in gold letters above the speaker’s rostrum in the U.S. House of Representatives. The national motto is also inscribed on the walls of the United States Senate chambers.
• Nearly 100 Members of Congress have the national motto prominently displayed in their offices.
