What is America best known for? Why have millions immigrated to our shores over the past three centuries and why have countless others risked everything in a desperate attempt to find a way in? What is it that draws the human soul to this country? Freedom!
Freedom of conscience, freedom to worship, freedom to live according to one’s deeply-held beliefs are a core longing woven into God’s very design of man and a primary reason that religious liberty was a leading principle in our nation’s founding.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito sounded the alarm earlier this month when addressing a group of Catholic attorneys. He stated that the country’s dedication to religious liberty is being put to the test like never before. “A wind is picking up that is hostile to those with traditional moral beliefs. We are likely to see pitched battles in courts and Congress, state legislatures, and town halls… but the most important fight is for the hearts and minds of our fellow Americans. It is up to all of us to evangelize our fellow Americans about the issue of religious freedom.”
In an all-too-common threat by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Berkeley County, South Carolina School Board was told, “Either stop praying or defend yourself in a costly lawsuit!” You read that right! No more praying for your students and teachers.
The South Carolina Legislative Prayer Caucus was not going to put up with that. Signed by over 50 members they fired off a letter in support of the School Board reminding them of the Supreme Court decision defending their right to open their meetings in prayer, not to mention the constitutional right every American has to pray.
To emphasize the point, Governor Nikki Haley signed a state law giving school boards the right to open meetings with prayer. Needless to say, the Berkeley County School Board has reinstated the practice of opening their meetings with prayer.
Does this attack on faith concern you? It should! The Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation was formed to help fight these battles, to increase awareness about what’s taking place throughout the country, to stand with our government leaders who support religious liberty, and to empower, equip, and encourage you… a citizen who enjoys what others have died for.
Together, we must continue to fight and advocate for our religious freedoms. Our Founders understood true freedom is perpetuated by a self-governing people who understand they are accountable to a Higher Law and a Higher Power; and who can coalesce around those set principles and moral code derived from the Creator of humankind and human rights Himself.
America is now a melting pot of diverse people including Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Atheists; and it’s only from the Judeo-Christian perspective, that all are made in God’s image and have innate value and worth. To that end, in order for America to remain a place that respects the freedom for all to live according to their deeply-held convictions – religious freedom – Americans must advocate for our Judeo-Christian heritage, and the original definition of religious freedom, to be an integral part of our future.
Join us in praying for our government leaders, for Americans to embrace the key concepts that founded America, and for the original definition of Freedom of Religion to endure for generations to come.
