Thanks to the quick response and a united effort, the erroneous attempt to imbed humanist chaplains in the military and erode the essential roles of chaplains, has been prevented – for now.

Congressman Lamborn, Member of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, and Senator Wicker led an effort to send a letter signed by over 50 Members of Congress to the Secretary of the Navy and Navy Chief of Chaplains asking them to oppose the request for the appointment of a humanist chaplain. After Congress sent this strong letter, and like-minded organizations took actions through letters and phone calls, the Navy has declined the appointment of a humanist chaplain.

In 2015, Jason Heap tried to sue his way into the chaplaincy. Not surprisingly, the Navy rejected him because he planned to associate with two humanist groups instead of an actual religious denomination. The military was sued and won.

This year, Heap submitted an application again and the Chaplain Appointment and Retention Eligibility Advisory Group actually recommended the Navy accept him. Senator Wicker wrote an op-ed on this issue here.
