The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The first act of the First Congress was to open session in prayer.

Since that day, national leaders have acknowledged that prayer is an integral part of the American way of life. Drawing upon God and His wisdom and strength is a fundamental right as Americans, as is the right to have no faith at all. Our government is responsible to protect that right, which is the true definition of “separation of church and state.”

The National Day of Prayer is observed on the first Thursday of May. A Resolution recognizing the 31st Anniversary of the National Day of Prayer was sponsored by CPC member Rep. Loudermilk in the House, and by Governors in all 50 states.
