Legislators take another step in the right direction. Thanks to the courageous efforts of the Kentucky lawmakers, Kentucky school children will be guaranteed the right to have a Bible course as part of their public education. 

Academic study of the Bible in public schools is legal in all 50 states of the union, and Kentucky is one of many states that has passed a bill to include Bible literacy courses in public schools. HB 128 specifically establishes an elective social studies course on the Bible. 

Throughout America’s history the reading of the Bible and prayer has been a foundational part of public education. It wasn’t until the 1963 Supreme Court ruling in Abington v Schempp that public schools were no longer required to provide devotional use of the Bible. However, in that same decision, the Supreme Court explicitly acknowledged that academic study of the Bible in public schools is constitutional, as part of a good education.

This is an exciting step in the right direction. Our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and sharing these core concepts with the next generation will ensure lasting freedom for generations.
